Monday Night Football on ESPN Sucks
I watched last night’s ESPN telecast on the preseason game between the Dallas Cowboys and New Orleans Saints via TiVo delay in the wee hours this morning. My word, it was awful.
And it wasn’t Kornheiser, who is actually coming along quite nicely. It wasn’t even the annoying Joe Theisman, although why Disney would dump John Madden and Al Michaels to team up Mike Tirico with Theisman and Kornheiser is beyond me. No, it was the insipid sideline reporters and idiotic show production. Granting that it was an exhibition game, it was still maddening to have the cameras cut to Suzie Colber and Michelle Tafoya interviewing anyone who happened to walk by.
As glad as I am that Rayfield Wright finally made it into the Hall of Fame, I don’t want to see and hear an interview with him while game action is being missed. That goes a hundredfold for Louisiana’s nitwit governor. I heard quite enough from that incompetent woman while she was botching management of Hurricane Katrina, thank you. Save that sort of thing for the pre-game show or halftime, please.
The in-booth interview with Cowboys owner/GM/President/CEO/Advertising Head/Best Boy/Gaffer Jerry Jones was handled more deftly, in that at least the cameras were on the game action while they were having the conversation. Even there, though, it was rather awkward to have the announcers have to recover from having yapped over a Tony Romo touchdown bomb to some undrafted rookie wideout.
This ain’t the Olympics, folks. We’re here to watch the game, not listen to cutiepie sideline girls interview B-list celebrities.

I totally agree! These guys make Jefferson Pilot Sports broadcasters look like professionals. When are the suits going to learn that 95% of the people are watching because they like watching the action of the sport, not listening to athletes, former athletes, and never athletes.
I finally turned the sound down and the music up and amazingling John Coltrane did a much better job of covering the game.
Give me Dennis Miller…or just about anybody but these three. You are too kind. They need to be combing the broadcast waiver wires for mid-season replacements TODAY!
The TV coverage by the announcers is absolutely dreadful. We are interrupted from the game by ridiculous commentary, irrevelent statistics, absurb popups and it drove me away. It is a terrible way to show a football game.
Poor Joe Theisman, no Heisman, won’t make the Hall of Fame, a perennial bridesmaid and dumb and noxious yapper. You’ve given him a venue and are costing ESPN MNF viewers. Where we’d thought the other two might be enough to pull it out, last night’s mean fest re: the Pack and Brett Favre as Theisman’s target: enough. ESPN’s MNF is an sad parody of Madden/Michaels. If this is the standard, ESPN can count us out. And we are one big bunch of serious football fans. You couldn’t be more right. It sucks big time.
I aggree completely. Just watched the Packers play the Bengals last night. It was like trying to watch one of those horrible XLF games where you constantly are missing field action so you can look at some idiot on the sidelines interview someone you could care less about spew bland and generic garbage like “I just like to play hard and improve as a player.” Gee, that was so important to hear and to actually WATCH him say, good thing I didn’t get distracted from it by the last 4 downs I just missed.
They also sometimes tried some stupid split screen graphic crap so all you could see were tiny ants and the smaller talking head and 60% of my 42″ plasma was nothing but stupid orange ESPN graphic border. What idiots. Never going to watch any NFL on ESPN ever again. I don’t care the the score is 100-0, if there is ACTION ON THE FIELD it should be SHOWN all else is filler crap!
Monday night football started going downhill with the Dennis Miller debacle. Now with the Kornholer guy and all his negative and droning talk it makes me want to drive nails in my head. All they focus on is what is wrong with this team or what is wrong with that player. Or why they can’t do this or do that. And what about those sideline interviews by the female announcers cutting into the televised playing time!! All we fans want is football with an occasional play-by-play commentary they way it used to be.
I think ESPN may have killed Monday night football. If I have to listen to those 3 one more time thats it for me. I can take Joe he at least can call most of the game. The other 2 yahoo’s have to go and go soon.
These guys are terrible. I don’t know who espn would get to repalce them. I’m thinking Kenny Stabler and his southern draw would be comparable to Meredith. I like Fouts and Dierdorf, but have no idea who the play by play guy would be.
WHo the play by play guy would be? There has not been a play by play guy since 1975. More like the Listen to some more of my bs guy.
This is the worst football coverage I have ever seen. Suzi Kobler should be slapped for being more than stupid. Time to bring back Madden and Michaels!
Rick
Monday nite football use to be something to look forward to. After tonight…I’d rather watch anything but that!!!!
I am sooooooooooooooo insulted tonight. “Is the Game over yet????” How many times to I have to hear a so called “non-objective” commentater say this??? Frankly, I’m appalled. Enough said. Give me J. Madden ’cause after tonight I am boycotting ESPN. (PS..DON’T QUIT YOUR DAY JOB
“mr. commentator!!!!)
LittleWing (Lifetime NFL Fan:)) …and NOT a WI resident, but have complete respect for their (our) loyalty to a team that still plays for the Lovc of the Game…………
What the heck is ESPN doing to MNF. I couldn’t even finish watching the Packers/Eagles last night. They decided to interview Steve McNair sometime during play. I just about lost it when Kornhole and Steve shared a split screen, talking about McNabb in the midst of a drive. My god these guys suck. I miss Dennis Miller.
I think they should have just moved the old ESPN sunday nite crew to monday nite..and whats with the dozen or so washed up musicians now singing the intro…Little Richard dosent exactly make me think of football.
i never thought i would see the day when joe theisman would be the best in the booth. what is television coming to. and tony kornholer oh my god who the hell is he blowing to get that gig
This Monday night crap has got to stop. And what are they doing now? Is this a talk show or a football game. WHY did they have that idiot from desperate house wifes on? Yea I learned alot about football from him (Not) Keep the girly crap for baseball. I like Michaels and Madden at least they knew what they were talking about and the chick’s need to get off the field I’m a girl and I think they suck anybody can read a script on a screen but it doesn’t mean they know what they are talking about.
Let’s Bring Back FOOTBALL and leave the Talk show’s to people who couldent make it as actors and actresses.
Thank you
Mary
Go Cowboys
It’s gross to see two gay guys blowin’either themselves,or a few quarterbacks that are’nt even playing.Joe,,,Tony? There’s three of you guys in the booth, communicate with Mike sometime.Include him in the Monday Night Football broadcast.Tony to Joe,”Soo what do you do now Quarterback?”GAY AASSSSSS!!!!!!!!Commenting on a play in tonights broadcast.
ESPN has killed monday night football. I am sick of watching all of the worthless sideline interviews and JOE THEISMAN IS HORRIBLE. This is possibly the worst coverage of any NFL game anywhere. Hopefully the ratings will go down enough so ESPN realizes something has to be done because everyone I talk to hates it.
I am not too happy with NBC on Sunday’s either. Can you beleive that they have that commercial in spanish now? What the hell is that? We are in america they need to learn our language why do we have to listen to theirs on an english station. It’s getting to the point were I don’t even enjoy football anymore. Can you beleive the Bears they did not deserve to win that one. Unbeleivable huh?
Still Love the Cowboys.
i couldn’t agree more that MNF coverage this year is the worst. tony and mike blather like idiots. joe may not be the best but he did play football and does understand the game. why do they have to interview everyone in the booth while the game is going on. i want to watch football period. i’m waiting for paris hilton or oprah to be special guest next week. geez i guess it could be worse but not much.
The TV coverage by the mnf announcers is absolutely maddening. They compete with one another to deliver ridiculous commentary, irrevelent statistics, and on and on….last night was it for me. It is a terrible way to show a football game.
these are the worst announcers i have ever heard…they never close their mouths…they are speaking all things, all ways…monday night football was a good watch with michaels and madden. doesn’t espn listen to the audience?
Moday Night football on ESPN trys to do too many things within the game time. My wife and myself was hollering, I don’t care what so and so thinks, I want to watch the game!
Wow!!! I never thought there would be a day that I hate Monday Night Football. I now look forward to Sunday Night Football. Al and John are the voices of football. The stooges on MNF, I don’t even get them. They have no chemistry together. They pick sides instead of being neutral and comment on the game. They Joe Theisman rant and go on and on about a single player that they like or dislike. Its just terrible, I almost want to watch the game without sound.
I totally agree, MNF is becoming a joke, they should fire these two stupid commentators and go back to football.
We used to have a saying at work,” You can mess with my job, mess with vacation time, but you’re not messing with my football”.
Thanks a lot ESPN. Not only was I subjected to your late night Sunday games for years, now its every Monday. I just cannot watch anymore. I’ve missed critical scoring drives, key injuries, and watched you talk about Dancing with the Stars and who’s the better looking Barber Twin. ABC has made a big mistake. YOU RUINED MY MONDAY NIGHTS!! No more MNF at the bar with friends, I stay home because I am so distracted by Theisman not making any sense and Kornheiser trying to be funny. WE DONT WANT COMEDY!! REMEMBER DENNIS MILLER!! You had it right, Madden, the biggest name in football insight and Al Michaels, a true seasoned orator, and the two had chemistry.
Thanks again idiots. Maybe you should start interviewing quarterbacks after a round in dancing with the stars.
I had never missed a Monday Night game for the last 10 years. But this year, I have not finished a single Monday game. I would be enjoying the football action, and then this squeaky, cutsy, no-clue voice comes from the sideline. It just drives my nuts. The first time I saw this Suzie girl was on a Sport Center broadcast four months ago. That evening, I emailed ESPN and asked them to consider getting rid of her. Of course she stayed on the show. When I saw her on Monday night the first time, I just could not believe ESPN did that to me.
Looks like a consensus. MNF on ESPN sucks!! I’ve tried to watch it throughout the season, but the coverage got in the way of the ball game. I’ve actually written ABC telling them that Sunday Night Football is now our “Monday Night Football”.
If I see another B-list, illiterate, obnoxious “celebrity” being interviewed in the booth by Larry, Curly and Moe, I’m gonna hurl.
COMEON ESPN! READ YOUR MAIL! MNF Is a joke with those three yahoos in the booth,,, worst coverage ive EVER seen,,, Do something, if not, your going to see ratings going in the same sewer the dieria of mouth guys, larry curley and moe… Oh in case you dont know who they are,, its the three stooges.. sheesh
I was on deployment off Somalia during the football season. We did get MNF games through Armed Forces Network but I wish we didn’t. It made being deployed that much worse…..Kornheiser is the absolute worst. I dont even want to start about those two on the sidelines.
THE WORST EVER!
ESPN Sucks for any football. Watched the KC Chiefs on Thur night billed as Special MNF but couldn’t make it through the game due to the stupid comments and sidline interviews. Come on, we’re trying to watch futball…. Then to top everything we had to listen to 20 minutes of Vick lowlights…..ESPN HAS GOT TO GO!
I couldn’t agree more! If it’s not Theisman or Kornheiser (who absolutely drives me nuts with his jackass comments), it’s the ladies on the sidelines with their idiotic interviews.. It’s gotten so bad that I watch the game on mute now and I’m thinking about Tivo’ing SNF while I watch it and then rewatching it on Monday night.
I was watching the Bears and Colts, what a dissapointment. The Morans that were supposed to announcing the game, spent a full quarter promoting the Colts Coach. If they love him that much, MARRY him, and shut up. We want to watch football and not these idiots and thier political promotions. I will probly not watch ESPN MNF again, as long as these Clowns are on there. If they do not know how to narrate a Football game, then get a job on the Shopping Network. Chuck
Its Monday August 27th. We just turned off ESPN. That is NOT Monday nite football. It is the product of Jerry Springer producers on drugs. unwatchable!
SOMEONE please tell ESPN and the NFL that we watch football for the game not to listen to a gossip fest. Get the people in the booth to call the game.
They talked through a complete series of downs and didn’t even look up to see what was going on. Worst announcers I have ever seen. And that includes high school announcers.
Just sent an email to ESPN, which I would encourage everyone who thinks MNF sucks to do the same. This has got to be the worst sporting event on TV now. Kornheiser, please do us all a favor and don’t go back to the MNF booth please stop, please, I’m begging you. Sunday Night Football is what I look forward to, say what you want about John Madden but these guys stick to Football, they don’t go on and on about Golf or any other sport. Someone at ESPN has got to know this stuff, what are they doing over there?
Monday Night Football has to make up their minds, are they a football show or a talk show. I quit watching last night at half time. I just couldn`t stand the five talking heads any longer. If the idiots in the booth aren`t disrupting the game by thier constant banter and idiotic in-booth interviews, then the two female talking heads disrupt the game by their stupid side line interviews. Good bye, and good riddance, Monday Night Foot ball.
I can’t stand this program anymore, so unless the Broncos are playing (and even then I’ll use my online Field Pass for audio) they can count me out on watching this show.
The worse part was the sideline interviews being conducted while big plays are happening and the commentation is simply annoying.
Bring back Al Michaels!!
I have been a long time viewer of Monday Night Football. Since ESPN took over the broadcast, the quality of the broadcast has dropped off. This week the show hit a new low. The reporters were too busy taking comments from players about Michael Vick and missed the Falcons touchdown. Monday Night Football is not a comedy show or a news broadcast. It is a professional sporting event and we watch it for the game. If ESPN can’t cover the game in a professional manner, then ESPN should be suspended by the NFL.
Please tell the Monday Nite Guy’s this is foot ball not a side show let’s get on with the game. Get rid o0f the talk show host, this is football not a cooking show. No more Michael Vick, let’s talk about the players that are in the game that is being played, thank you.
ESPN HAS RUINED FOOTBALL JUST BY THE SOUND. THEY SOUND LIKE THEY ARE TALKING OUT OF A BOX, CHEAP SOUND SYSTEM,SOUNDS LIKE THEY ARE COMMMENTING ON HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL GAME.
I hate Monday night football because:
- The announcers are talentless morons
- It’s on ESPN – a Disney/ABC venture (don’t screw with the Mouse House)
- It’s on too darn (expletive edited) late for anyone on the East Coast with a meaningful job to enjoy
Do me a favor – don’t make the Eagles play on Monday night anymore!
Redskins vs. Eagles…. jaws, barkley, tony, and the other guy are really annoying tonight.
shut up and talk about the game… save the gossip talk for the view.
monday night football has seriously taken a downward spiral since going to espn.
and these commentators don’t even talk about the game they are being paid to commentate about… and they spend too much time on one subject, who cares…. they miss important game analysis talking about stealing signs.
i now mute the game and turn on the radio.
Last night’s game between the Redskins and the Eagles was the worst commentary I have ever heard. It sounded like like a “good ‘ol boy” reunion interrupted by a football game. I am here to watch the game, get some insight and some interesting facts about the players. But last night I heard everything else instead. Sometimes they had to interrupt themselves to call the play and several times they almost missed the fact that a game was going on at all. Please, Please tell the commentators that we don’t need “The View” type of reporting. We want some people who are into the game as much as we are. Thanks
What happened to the game of Monday night football? The last two weeks suck, first they talk all night about Michael Vick then this week it was the Patriots. I tune in to watch football, not to watch three guys bull their way through the night. Get some announcers that can call the game and let us watch the game. Talk shows are for after the games are done and there is nothing else to watch.
I have looked forward to sitting down to watch Monday Night Football for more than thirty-five years. Your network has managed to ruin that in less than two seasons. Get rid of Tony especially. Tell the rest of them to watch the game and let us watch the game and no more heated arguments. Let us enjoy the game!
espn is the worst monday night team ever in tilevison
Glad to see I’m not the only one. The 3 in the booth are garbage. Absolute amateur hour. Are they football fans? Or fans of ruining good viewing. I’m not sure if the games ARE any good any more, as I’m so distracted by the crap that flys out of their mouths. And don’t even get me started on the 2 useless “look at my new haircuts” sideline reporters.
The current MNF team is absolutely awful. I can watch any game on any channel by any broadcast team (including local preseason commentators) and not feel the need to hit the mute button no matter how inept the commentary, because generally I can just kind of tune it out if it’s bad and focus on the action… but with today’s MNF it’s really, really hard not to hit the mute button. Their inane ramblings are so distracting you really can’t just tune them out. They just absolutely ruin the game. Somebody please shoot them.
ESPN somehow thinks it needed to make MNF a weekly Super Bowl. Ten ‘experts’ doing analysis and pointless predictions, ridiculous over-produced theme songs to “get the party started”…ugh. Just give us the game and 2 announcers. Joe T. is gone! Yes!!! Suzy K. needs to be next! She’s even doing NASCAR now, enough of her! Thank God the MLB playoffs are on another network.
Kornhoolio needs to STFU. And I thought Theezman had an annoying voice. Jeez. Give the inane comments a rest. You are NOT smart or funny Tony! Quit pretending to be. Wilbon would have easily been a better choice.
Congradulations ESPN, you have killed Monday Night Football. We now have the Monday Night “Sideshow” featuring Tony Kornheiser and his two side kicks. This format stinks. If I wanted to hear from “soap” stars, and walk on entertainers plugging their TV shows or movies, I’d buy one of the tabloids from the supermarket checkout.. These guys spend more time stroking their ego’s and interjecting their half-baked theories and comments, than “calling” the game. We tried turning off the sound but we also have to put up with watching “them” while the game is going on. Enough is enough. Apparently ESPN doesn’t want to hear what the viewers have to say. Maybe the sponsers will get their attention when they find out that when the viewers are “tuning out” Tony they are also “tuning out” the commercials that pay for the program. Can we please sign a petition??? “GOD” PLEASE..PLEASE..Give us back Madden and Michaels
Please…..Someone tell ESPN to stop trying to make MNF a talk show! Save the debate for Tues-Sat (that’s what the rest of the week is for) and just call the frickin’ game…there’s more times spent watching the MNF crew’s silly mugs and their distracting product pushers than on-field action. It is so maddening…At least I found I’m not alone.
These guys sound like “The View”……shut the F**K up!!! They ruin football. We watch it muted.
Tirico is decent at play by play, but he needs to stop explaining to us how many challenges each team gets each week. Amateurs fallback to the same content when they are out of their element, and that is obviously what is going on here. Tony? Don’t get me started. Makes me miss Dennis Miller. Ohmigod, did I just say that? Yes, I guess I did. The only redeeming quality is when Jaws actually says something thoughtful, and demonstrates a knowledge of the game. The other two need to shut up and let him say advanced things like ‘cover 2′ and ‘zone blitz’. Sad that it has come to this, but that’s where we are at. They should allow a public access SAP for us to do our own commentary. My cat could offer better color commentary than Cornloser. In fact, sometimes I mute the sound and listen to her. She seems to recognize the defensive packages better than Tirico…
Now this says it all. Read what Kornhole said in an interview before joining the MNF team:
At the same time, however, he could not recall broadcasting a live game. “I’ve never done this,” he said. “It seems daunting. I could be a disaster.”
YOU THINK? I’ve got news for you dip shit! YOU ARE A DISASTER! Get that arrogant piece of dung trash off the air NOW!
With what ESPN has done to MNF, they should just get it over with and move it to Lifetime. I’m sure all that gossip, idiot celebrities and plugging of TV shows, would do well on that network. Football? What football?
I did not notice the names of the men (titled sportcasters) for the Bronco and Green Bay Monday Night game (October 29,2007). I only know that they were irritating and anti-Bronco from the beginning. My friends seeing the game in Afganistan emailed the same thoughts and also the persons at my work out club). They were obviously pro Brett Favre and family from the beginning. Everyone noticed that as well. Yes, Brett Favre is a great player, but was it necessary to make the Brett Favre and Family Hour while they were playing in Denver. Honor them if you must… but at a home game….ya think? This was so entirely tacky. Look at it again. You guys stink. Really stink. Take some lessons … there are some great sports commentators… Dick Enberg.. Dan Deerdorf and others. They can give you some help.and perhaps interject a bit of class.. you need it.
Truly,
Not just a fan of Broncos,
A fan of football,
Kris
