Must be important for him to be there with this particular group, and turning down the President will raise their respect for him.

At least, that’s my theory. I think its a good move on a team that has appeared to have some shakyness in the past. Of course, now he’s locked into the position of turning the Pres down during training camp., which may not be what he intended.
