Red Sox Sign Daisuke Matsuzaka

Japanese pitching sensation Daisuke Matsuzaka has signed with the Boston Red Sox.

Daisuke Matsuzaka headed to Boston on Wednesday with Red Sox officials, a sign that Boston had reached a preliminary contract agreement with the star pitcher. “They all took off together,” Red Sox owner John Henry said in an e-mail to The Associated Press.

Matsuzaka’s stats with Seibu Lions are impressive, indeed:

Whether he can replicate that performance in the Major Leagues and be worth this kind of money is another story:

The sides reportedly were $3 million-per-year apart Tuesday night. Sources told the Boston Herald that the Red Sox’s latest offer to the pitcher is six years for $8 million per year. Matsuzaka’s camp, according to the Herald, has made a counteroffer of $11 million per year for six years.

That’s pretty good money for a man who has never thrown a Major League pitch.
