Tony Dungy and Lovie Smith 1st Black Super Bowl Coaches
This picture graces the front page of ESPN.com:
We’ve reached the point where the fact that both men are black is unremarkable. Nobody seriously thinks black men can’t coach a major sports program to a championship.
Yet, the fact that this is the first Super Bowl that features a black head coach–let alone two–is getting a lot of attention. It’s unfortunate. It diminishes Dungy and Smith to view them as tokens, representing their race, rather than as top notch football minds and leaders.
