Did Oakland Raiders Coach Tom Cable punch one of his assistants?

ESPN is reporting two differing versions. First the written-

Oakland Raiders head coach Tom Cable denied reports on Monday that he punched defensive assistant Randy Hanson in the jaw and caused injuries that required treatment at a hospital earlier this month.

According to AOL FanHouse, Cable hit Hanson on Aug. 5 for unknown reasons. A report filed with the Napa Police Department describes an unnamed 41-year-old assistant coach being treated at the Queen of the Valley Hospital for a jaw injury, which the victim alleges was caused by an unidentified member of the Raiders coaching staff.

But Cable told ESPN’s Mark Schlereth later Monday that no punches were thrown.

That’s backed up by what former NFL scout Daniel Jeremiah told ESPN’s Chris Mortensen. Jeremiah’s “reliable source”

In public, Cable is saying it is ‘an internal matter’ and refuses to say nothing more. This morning on Mike and Mike in the morning, a ESPN radio sports talk show, they played a audio tape of Cable making the internal matter statement.

The only people who know for sure, are those at the meeting and I’m betting more contradictory versions will keep coming out. In the end this is likely to make Cable’s hold on the Raiders’s head coaching job even shakier than it is. Only success on the football field may keep his job before the 2010 NFL season begins.

Declawed- Y.E. Yang wins the PGA Championship

He made a birdie at the 18th hole to beat Tiger Woods by three shots. Just unbelievable but Yang played great today and is a deserving winner.

After taking the lead at 14, Yang matched Woods stroke for stroke on holes 15-17. That didn’t mean the holes were without drama. On 16, Yang pushed his 2nd shot perilously close to Lake Hazeltine. The ball missing the hazard by a couple of feet at most.

At 17, Woods flew the green after Yang put his on about 30 feet from the hole. Woods pitch to the green wasn’t very good and Yang looked certain to pick up a stroke. Then Yang hit probably his worst shot of the day. His first putt came up eight feet short. He and Woods both ended up bogeying the 17th hole.

Yang hit his drive on 18 down the left side. Which gave him a problematical 2nd shot. This because the pin was on the left and there were trees between Yang and the hole. Woods was in the fairway and the pressure was on. Yang then almost holed his second shot before the ball settled seven feet past the hole. This forced Woods to try making a miracle shot. It wasn’t even close. Woods made bogey at 18 and Yang a birdie. A golfer who I a self admitted golf nut hadn’t heard of before March 2009 when he won the Honda Classic, had just won the PGA Championship by outdueling Tiger Woods on Sunday. What a finish to the last major of 2009. Now I have the Fedex(puke) and Solheim Cup to look forward to.

I blogged about Yang’s victory in progress at a post here if anyone is interested in reading it.

Derek Jeter becomes all time hit leading shortstop

He passed Luis Aparicio with a double today.

Yankees captain Derek Jeter has passed Hall of Famer Luis Aparicio for most hits by a shortstop.

Jeter hit an RBI double in the third inning of Sunday’s game against the Seattle Mariners. His 2,674th hit as a shortstop came two innings after he had singled against Seattle rookie starter Doug Fister leading off the game.

He had seven hits in his first 14 at-bats of the four-game series with the Mariners.

Jeter also has 13 hits as a designated hitter in his career.

His 2,687 hits as of the third inning Sunday were second in Yankees history, 34 behind Lou Gehrig.

Barring some scandal, Jeter will be elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame one day.

Usain Bolt sets new 100m record

The previous mark was set by Bolt at the 2008 Summer Olympics. From AP-

Usain Bolt has captured another world record, winning the 100-meter race in 9.58 seconds at the world championships.

Bolt shaved 0.11 seconds off the record he set at the Beijing Olympics, beating defending champion Tyson Gay on Sunday, who set a U.S. record of 9.71 seconds.

In the fastest 100 ever, Asafa Powell earned a bronze with a time of 9.84 in Berlin.

The race had been the most anticipated event of the world championships and lived up to its billing.

Bolt won the Olympic gold in Beijing last year with a world record performance of 9.69.

That big an improvement in these days of drug scandals in sports always makes fans suspicious.

For less than a dollar a day- New Mexico State asks fans for snack help

Send us your twinkies, M&Ms, etc. etc. From AP-

Calling all New Mexico State Aggies fans. Your team has the munchies and you can help.

In a twist on Little League moms lining up with after-game treats, New Mexico State’s budget-conscious football staff distributed an e-mail this week asking fans to donate after-practice or late-night snacks for hungry players.

It’s a consequence of the national economy, of course.

“It’s a decision we had to make with regard to our meals,” first-year coach DeWayne Walker said Thursday. “There are a lot of other areas where we have to make tough choices with how we’re going to spend our money.”

We have some starving 300 lb men with need for more nourishment. That sales pitch will go over real well. Apparently not…..

That was the bad news. The good news for Walker and his players has been the community’s response. The memo went out after the first day of practice, and six donors wasted no time before they ponied up.

We’re not talking about Cheetos here.

“It’s good stuff like trail mix or peanut butter and jelly sandwiches,” linebacker Jamar Cotton said. “We had a guy bring in a bunch of watermelons. That was great. The team was excited. It was like little kids getting lollipops.”

As the saying goes- There’s a sucker born every minute.

Michael Vick signs with the Philadelphia Eagles

I don’t follow the Eagles enough to conjecture on how Vick will fit in. All I know is Eagle players better be prepared for a media circus. The AP article is below.

Michael Vick is back in the NFL, landing a job with the Philadelphia Eagles. “He signed with the Eagles,” agent Joel Segal told The Associated Press in a telephone interview Thursday. He said it was a two-year deal.

Vick, who served 18 months in prison for running a dogfighting ring, signed less than three weeks after he was conditionally reinstated by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.

Vick can immediately take part in preseason practices, workouts and meetings and can play in the final two preseason games. The former Atlanta Falcons quarterback can apply for full reinstatement by Week 6 in October.

WR Donte Stallworth suspended for entire 2009 NFL season

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell handed down his ruling this morning. Stallworth should be in jail right now. He was DUI and speeding when he struck and killed Mario Reyes last March 14th. The 30 day sentence given to Stallworth was a travesty of justice. You tell me if a regular middle class person would get such preferential treatment? No we wouldn’t, instead we would have our ass in a jail for well over a year and the time would be deserved. Oh yes Stallworth is serving house arrest for two years, but that’s a joke too. The Miami-Dade Judge recently ruled Stallworth could train outside his home. House arrest is turning into a joke, the court system in South Florida is a well known joke to most of the residents of the area. That includes myself.

IOC recommends Golf and Rugby for 2016 games

Will Tiger Woods and Michelle Wie be able to earn gold medals for the United States. From AP-

International Olympic leaders selected golf and rugby Thursday for proposed inclusion in the 2016 Summer Games, rejecting bids from baseball, softball and three other sports.

The International Olympic Committee executive board narrowed the field to two from a list of seven, which also included squash, karate and roller sports.

The board will submit golf and rugby sevens — a faster-paced version of the standard 15-a-side game — for ratification by the full 106-member IOC assembly in Copenhagen in October.

“In the end, the decision came down to which two would add the most value,” IOC President Jacques Rogge told reporters.

“Golf and rugby scored high on all 33 criteria,” Rogge said, adding this was still a proposal and it needed to be validated.

Anyone who visits this blog knows how much a fan I am of golf but Olympic golf just doesn’t interest me at this time.

Washington Nationals P Jordan Zimmermann out for the year

The bad news keeps piling up for the worst team in the major leagues.

Jordan Zimmermann will have reconstructive elbow surgery next week, leaving the Washington Nationals without their top pitching prospect for at least a year.

Manager Jim Riggleman said the normal recovery period is 12 to 18 months, a timetable that could keep the 23-year-old Zimmermann out until the 2011 season.

Acting general manager Mike Rizzo said Zimmermann is “as upbeat as you can be” about the surgery, which will be performed on his right elbow by Tommy John expert Dr. Lewis Yocum next Wednesday in California.

*****

Rizzo said the loss of Zimmermann is only a temporary setback to a promising career.

“We foresee a long, successful career for him,” Rizzo said.

Zimmermann was 3-5 with a 4.63 ERA in 16 starts for Washington in his first season above Double-A. He was considered a cornerstone of the team’s long-term rotation.

You have to expect Nats management to spin this as just a temporary setback. In all honesty, this is most likely a disaster for both Zimmerman and the Nationals. Yes pitchers have come back from ‘Tommy John’ surgery but most don’t.

Did the Nationals in an effort to improve their fortunes move Zimmermann along too quickly. We will never know for sure, but I will the statement Baltimore Orioles Manager Earl Weaver once made. “The best place for a young pitcher is long relief.”
