Jamie Moyer reached a rare mark for a pitcher, becoming the 44th to win 250 games. The veteran Phillies left-hander would have been just as happy if it was his first.
Moyer went six strong innings to lead the Phillies to their third straight victory, 4-2 over the bumbling Washington Nationals on Sunday.
The 46-year-old Moyer is only the 11th left-hander to join the exclusive 250-win list. And despite his teammates’ postgame champagne toast, Moyer’s words lacked the excitement one might expect after such a rare achievement.
“It’s not about the personal things, I’m more excited about us winning,” Moyer said. “I really haven’t thought about [winning 250]. It takes so much effort to prepare and play. I was taught to play the game as a team, not as an individual. When you play 20-some years, some of these things can happen.”
Moyer has been in the majors for twenty-three seasons and has played for seven different teams. He has owned the Florida Marlins. He is 10-1 against them lifetime.
I doubt Moyer will be elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame after his career is over. Left handers Jim Kaat and Tommy John have more wins and haven’t made it to Cooperstown.
Collecting social security disability while at the same time working as a sports official does it seem to be a little inconsistent to you? From AP-
A Nevada boxing judge has been indicted in Las Vegas on a federal charge that he improperly collected about $250,000 in Social Security disability benefits.
U.S. Attorney Gregory Brower said in a statement Wednesday that 65-year-old Paul G. Smith worked more than 100 boxing matches from September 1994 and December 2005 and was involved in several other businesses inconsistent with his disability status.
A federal grand jury handed up a one-count indictment Tuesday charging Smith with Social Security fraud.
Brower says Smith received a summons to appear for arraignment June 12 in U.S. District Court in Las Vegas. He faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted.
I find it interesting they just issued a summons to Smith. Is there not enough jail cells in Clark County?

Travis Tucker hit an RBI single with one out in the top of the 25th inning, leading Texas to a 3-2 victory over Boston College on Saturday night in the longest game in NCAA history.
The game eclipsed the previous record of 23 innings, set in 1971 when Louisiana-Lafayette defeated McNeese State 6-5. The game began at 7:02 p.m. EDT Saturday and concluded 7 hours, 3 minutes later at 2:05 a.m. Sunday.
Texas reliever Austin Wood pitched 13 innings, including 12 1/3 innings of no-hit ball before allowing a two-out single to Tony Sanchez in the 19th inning.
Texas (43-13-1) scored when Connor Rowe walked to lead off the top of the inning and was sacrificed to second by David Hernandez. Rowe advanced to third on a wild pitch, and Tucker grounded past second base through the drawn-in infield for the record-setting victory over Boston College (34-25).
Tucker’s hit came in his NCAA-record 12th at-bat to tie a mark he now shares with teammate Michael Torres, who also batted 12 times.
Texas reliever Austin Dicharry earned his eighth victory by pitching 5 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, striking out four and allowing one hit.
The longest professional game was a minor league affair played in 1981. It went 33 innings. Two future Hall of Famers took part in that affair, Wade Boggs and Cal Ripken Jr.

Eddie Jordan is the new head coach of the Philadelphia 76ers, leaving Sacramento’s vacancy as the only remaining coaching opening in the league.
Jordan and the Sixers have reached an agreement on a multi-year deal to reunite the former Washington Wizards coach with Sixers president Ed Stefanski after Jordan and Stefanski worked together in New Jersey.
Jordan was the first to interview for the Philly job — which came open May 11 when Tony DiLeo returned to his front-office post after taking over for Maurice Cheeks in December and guiding the Sixers to the No. 6 seed in the East — and the only other candidate interviewed twice by Stefanski besides Dallas Mavericks assistant coach Dwane Casey.
Sources said Jordan was also the top candidate in Sacramento, but it was believed from the start he preferred to land with the Sixers, largely because Philly is coming off back-to-back playoff appearances. The Kings are essentially starting over after going 17-65 last season and coming out of last week’s lottery with the No. 4 overall pick despite finishing with the league’s worst record.
The status of the NBA franchise Philadelphia is obviously much rosier than that of the one in Sacramento. However the 76ers are nothing more than a run of the mill team. Jordan will have to work hard to improve on that and quickly or he could be fired just as fast as Cheeks was. I will grant this- Jordan did achieve a 20 game improvement in his second year in Washington from what the Wizards did in his first year as their coach. Maybe he can do it again.
While horse racing fans may have reason to be disappointed, I understand the most likely reason for this decision. I think the filly’s owners are just being cautious with their investment. From AP-
Preakness winner Rachel Alexandra will not run in the Belmont Stakes, opening the way for jockey Calvin Borel to return to Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird in his quest for a personal Triple Crown.
Jess Jackson, Rachel Alexandra’s co-owner, said Friday the spectacular filly “deserves a well-earned vacation.”
Rachel Alexandra, the first filly to win the Preakness in 85 years, had been set to work out Monday at Churchill Downs in Louisville, and no announcement was expected until after that. But Jackson explained she simply needed a rest after running — and winning — four graded stakes races since March 14, including a dominating victory in the Kentucky Oaks.
“We know the media and many fans would have liked to see her run in the Belmont Stakes — we feel the same,” Jackson said in a statement. “But all of us sincerely interested in the horse must agree that we only want to see her run when it is best for her. While she is in great shape, having strong works, and recovering well from her amazing performances, we feel Rachel deserves a well-earned vacation.”
Borel was the jockey aboard for both Mine That Bird in the Derby and Rachel Alexandra in the Preakness and Oaks. He was set to ride her again in the Belmont, but Mine That Bird’s trainer Chip Woolley had said he was prepared to wait — even into next week — if there was a chance Borel could become available again.
As I noted previously, changes of drivers from race to race isn’t unusual in harness racing. With Rachel Alexandra out of the Belmont, I pick Mine that Bird to win the Belmont. The horse knows how to close, and the Belmont is the lengthiest of the three Triple Crown races.
He was a rookie on the last Lions team to win the NFL Championship. RIP.
Former Lions defensive back and receiver Terry Barr, a rookie on Detroit’s last championship team in 1957, has died. He was 73.
Barr died Thursday at his Bloomfield Hills home after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease, said team spokesman Tim Pendell.
“Terry Barr was a true gentleman,” Lions president Tom Lewand said in a statement released by the team. “Not only was he an outstanding player throughout his career with the Lions, University of Michigan and Grand Rapids Central, but he was a genuinely kind and endearing man. Anyone who had the honor of knowing Terry loved him.”
Barr was a standout football and track athlete at Grand Rapids Central High School and a Michigan state champion in the 440-yard run in 1952 and 1953. He attended the University of Michigan, where he played defensive back and running back.
He was a third-round draft pick in 1957 and played defensive back for the Lions, returning an interception for a touchdown in the team’s 59-14 NFL title game over the Cleveland Browns.
Barr later switched to receiver and made two Pro Bowl appearances, in 1963 and 1964. He played nine seasons with the Lions and ranks 12th among Lions receivers, with 227 catches, 3,810 yards and 35 touchdowns.
“I don’t think Terry ever dropped a ball,” fellow Lions receiver Gail Cogdill said. “My kids just loved him. I loved him. He had great speed and was a class man and leader.”
Barr retired after the 1965 season and went into business.

An Atlanta Falcons player is out on bond following his arrest earlier this week, reportedly after a fight with his wife over a Facebook friend.
Offensive tackle Quinn Ojinnaka, 25, was booked into the Gwinnett County Jail at 1:40 a.m. Wednesday on a misdemeanor charge of simple battery, according to jail records. He was released about four hours later after posting a $2,400 bond.
Ojinnaka was arrested at his home in Suwanee after he fought with his wife and spat at her during an argument over a female friend of his on the social networking Web site, Facebook, according to a police report.

The altercation happened as Ojinnaka was preparing to watch a basketball game Tuesday night, the police report said.
Ojinnaka told police his wife tried to stab him with a pen, and she said he threw her on some stairs before tossing her out of the house, the police report said.
Neither party asked for medical assistance. Even if Mrs. Ojinnaka did what her husband claims, it doesn’t justify his actions. A 300-lb football player against a woman is a mismatch besides any violence except in self defense towards women sickens me.

New Mexico football coach Mike Locksley, on the job less than six months, has been accused of sexual harassment, age discrimination and retaliation by a former administrative assistant.
Sylvia Lopez filed a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. She worked under Locksley at the Lobos football office before transferring last month, then quit her university job May 15.
Locksley did not immediately respond to telephone messages left Friday by The Associated Press at New Mexico’s football office and through an athletic department publicist.
In a statement released to Albuquerque television station KRQE, Locksley said: “I had always treated everybody with respect. That is who I am. Change and transition is always tough on everybody. Out of respect for all involved, that is all I am going to say.”
Athletic director Paul Krebs said the university is taking the complaint seriously. He declined to discuss the claim in detail, saying it was a personnel matter and the EEOC was likely to conduct an investigation.
I know nothing about Locksley, so I won’t pass judgment one way or the other.

Florida Panthers General Manager Jacques Martin announced today that the club has signed undrafted free agent G Alexander Salák to an entry-level contract. As per club policy, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
“Salák is a talented, young goaltender who has played very well while developing his skills and competing in Europe,†said Martin. “He will attend our development camp next week and we look forward to his continued growth and production within our organization.â€
Salák 22, played in 53 games for TPS Turku (FIN) this season posting a 20-20-9 mark with a 2.40 GAA and a .923 save percentage. While playing for TPS Turku he was coached by Urpo Ylönen who has coached former TPS Turku goalies such as Miikka Kiprusoff and Antero Niittymäki.
The Strakonice, Czech Republic native, played for Budějovice (2002-2006) on their U-18 and U-20 teams, before signing in Finland, prior to the start of the 2007-08 season.
Will Balak be playing in Rochester or Sunrise(The location of the Panthers home arena) next year? The only contender Balak will have for the job of backing up Tomas Vokoun(assuming unrestricted free agent Craig Anderson signs with another NHL team) is Rochester Goalie Mike Brodeur. Brodeur was one of the few good things the Americans had going for them in what was a pitiful 2008-09 season.

Free agent linebacker Pisa Tinoisamoa agreed Friday to a one-year contract with the Chicago Bears after leading the St. Louis Rams in tackles four of the past six seasons.
The Bears also locked up defensive tackle Israel Idonije with a two-year extension through 2011 and agreed to contracts with seven of their nine draft picks.
The 6-foot-1, 240-pound Tinoisamoa led the Rams with 135 tackles (88 solo) before getting released by a new coaching staff seeking more size. In Chicago, he’s reuniting with coach Lovie Smith, his defensive coordinator during the 2003 season in St. Louis.
Tinoisamoa will probably start at strongside linebacker alongside Lance Briggs and Brian Urlacher, although incumbent Nick Roach and former starter Hunter Hillenmeyer are in the mix. A second-round pick by the Rams in 2003, he has 661 total tackles, 10 sacks, seven interceptions, 25 pass break-ups, six forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries in his career.
I think the Rams made a dumb decision releasing Tinoisamoa. St. Louis loss is Chicago’s gain I guess.
