NFL Draft 2009 Round 1 #25- Miami Dolphins- DB Vontae Davis

Miami definitely is in need of help at Defensive back.

ESPN writes- Davis is the best pure cover corner in his class. He’s fluid changing directions, shows great burst coming out of his cuts and is fast enough to run with wideouts downfield. Davis is more than a one-dimensional player, too. He’s a playmaker and can defend the run when he puts his mind to it. So why didn’t he come off the board earlier? There are questions about his work ethic and teams were likely wondering if he would to play to his ability.

An underacheiver then. It will be interesting if this pick works out for Miami. Other high DB picks(Jason Allen and Jamar Fletcher) in recent Dolphin draft history haven’t worked out too well.

NFL Draft 2009 Round 1 #24- Atlanta Falcons- DT Peria Jerry

Second Ole Miss player taken in the first round and in back to back fashion. I join ESPN in asking when was the last time that happened.(Back to back or Ole Miss separately)

ESPN writes- Jerry wouldn’t fit well in a two-gap scheme because he has problems holding his ground and working against double teams. He also needs to add some lower-body strength. On the flip side, we expect him to develop into a one-gap, upfield player who can disrupt running plays in the backfield and get to the quarterback. We especially like the way he uses his hands when he rushes the passer.

NFL Draft 2009 Round 1 #23- Baltimore from New England Patriots- OT Michael Oher

Maybe the best human interest story of the draft.

ESPN writes- Oher has yet to realize his potential and he likely will line up at right tackle to start his career, but if the light ever comes on for him he will emerge as an excellent left tackle. He has very good foot speed for his size and is fluid changing directions. He also has the size power to develop into an effective drive-blocker. The one concern with him is his ability to pick up the offense, so it may take him a little longer to crack the starting lineup than a lot of other prospects with his talent.

Coming soon- Miami Dolphins

After the Percy Harvin selection by Minnesota, I don’t expect Miami to take Wide Receiver.

NFL Draft 2009 Round 1 #22- Minnesota Vikings- WR Percy Harvin

The highest* pick of the draft.

ESPN writes- Harvin possess rare and dynamic open-field capabilities. He runs with a low center of gravity, which allows to get in and out of his cuts effortlessly. He also shows an elite burst and has the acceleration to take it the distance. Although Harvin will need some tweaking with his route-running his overall athleticism is too much to pass up at this point.

*- Harvin tested positive for marijuana recently.

NFL Draft 2009 Round 1 #21- Cleveland Browns- C Alex Mack

The Browns finally choose someone!

ESPN writes- Mack displays great strength and comes from a wrestling background, which allows him to play with great balance. He also possess the necessary ability to sink his hips and reset his feet when going up against bigger interior defensive tackles, and he shows excellent hand use.

NFL Draft 2009 Round 1 #20- Detroit Lions- TE Brandon Pettigrew

The first Tight End chosen. #1 selection Matthew Stafford has someone to throw the ball to.

ESPN writes- Pettigrew is the most complete tight end prospect in this class. At 263 pounds he’s an effective drive-blocker who can hold his own working against NFL defensive ends. Although he lacks elite speed and isn’t going to stretch the field as much as some other prospects in this class, Pettigrew is a reliable possession receiver who does an excellent job throwing his weight around and using his frame to shield defenders from the ball.

NFL Draft 2009 Round 1 #19- Tampa Bay from Cleveland- WR Jeremy Maclin

The Browns trade down again.

ESPN writes- Maclin is a big-play threat both as a wideout and a return man. He reaches his exceptional top-end speed quickly and is an instinctive open-field runner who reads defenses as well as his blocks well. Maclin has to improve his route running and ability to get off the line working against press coverage, but his quick feet suggest he’s capable of improving in both areas.

NFL Draft 2009 Round 1 #18- Denver Broncos- DE Robert Ayers

This pick was acquired in the Jay Cutler deal.

ESPN writes- Ayers possesses the size and athleticism to be an effective outside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme. He has the strength to hold the edges against the run and fluidity to spot-drop when ask to drop into coverage. One of Ayers’ best qualities is his ability to get to the passer. That capability was the reason Denver pulled the trigger on him.

NFL Draft 2009 Round 1 #17- Tampa Bay from Cleveland from NY Jets- QB Josh Freeman

The Browns traded down allowing Mark Sanchez to be picked by the Jets. Then Cleveland trades down again.

ESPN writes- In terms of natural ability you couldn’t ask for anything more in a QB prospect. At 6-foot-6, Freeman is tall enough to scan the field from the pocket. He’s big enough at 248 pounds to bounce off would-be tacklers and is mobile enough to pick up yards with his feet when nothing’s available downfield. The concern we have is his ability to absorb an NFL offense and adjust to the speed and complexity of NFL defenses. There couldn’t be more of a red flag for a quarterback when it comes to film evaluation than that.
