Kevin Mitchell, Former NFL Linebacker, Dies at 36

Kevin Mitchell, who played linebacker in the NFL from 1994-2003, has died.

Former NFL linebacker Kevin Mitchell died in his sleep at the age of 36.

Mitchell died overnight Sunday at his home in Ashburn [Virginia], near the Washington Redskins’ training facility, according to the team. An autopsy was performed Monday by the Virginia state medical examiner’s office. The cause of death was not immediately announced.

Mitchell was drafted in the second round out of Syracuse in 1994 by the San Francisco 49ers, who moved the undersized college defensive lineman to linebacker. He played with San Francisco until 1997, then signed with New Orleans (1998-99). He played his final four seasons (2000-03) with the Redskins.

“Anyone who knew him was touched by his smile, joy for life and love of his family,” Washington owner Dan Snyder said. “Anyone who ever played with him or against him never forgot it. He earned our deepest respect.”

Sad news.

2007 NFL Draft Grades

NFL Draft Logo 2007 Below are some expert analyses of Day 1 of the 2007 NFL Draft. I’ll update the list over the next couple of days as more roll in.

NFL Draft 2007 – Round 7

NFL Draft Logo 2007 The 7th and final round of the 2007 NFL Draft is underway. New England has selected USC inside linebacker Oscar Lua with their pick from Oakland.

NFL Draft 2007 – Round 6

NFL Draft Logo 2007 The 6th Round of the 2007 NFL Draft is now underway.

NFL Draft 2007 – Round 5

NFL Draft Logo 2007 The 5th round of the 2007 NFL Draft is well underway. It gets much less exciting for the fans at this point, as the reaction to our team’s picks is generally “Who?!”

Still, some great players wind up being taken here. Picking well in the 5th and 6th rounds distinguishes great drafts from merely good ones.

NFL Draft 2007 – Round 4

NFL Draft Logo 2007 Round 4 of the 2007 NFL Draft is underway. The Oakland Raiders started us off by taking Michael Bush, a running back who would likely have gone early in the first round were he healthy. He’ll likely sit out his first year, a la Willis McGehee a couple years back, but the Raiders are getting him for a high 4th, not a low 1st that the Buffalo Bills spent. Potentially, the steal of the draft.

2007 NFL Draft Day Trades

NFL Draft Logo 2007 The guys at ESPN.com analyze all the trades from Day 1 of the 2007 NFL Draft. While I tend to look at these trades in terms of the numerical value of the picks, they simply look at the players each team winds up picking with the selections.

NFL Draft 2007 – Round 3

NFL Draft Logo 2007 The draft has been ongoing over nine and a half hours and Round 3 is just now getting under way, with the Oakland Raiders taking Georgia DE Quentin Moses. Thankfully, as Norm Hitzges points out, teams only get 5 minutes a pick from here on out.

NFL Draft 2007 – Round 2

NFL Draft Logo 2007 Round 2 is underway and I’ll update as it goes along. The trades are fast and furious and there’s much less information available as we get deeper in the draft and I won’t do player-by-player analyses other than perhaps for the picks made by the Dallas Cowboys and really oddball news (like Philly taking Houston QB Kevin Kolb with their first pick).

NFL Draft 2007 – Round 1 #27 – New Orleans Saints – WR Robert Meachem

The New Orleans Saints took Tennessee wideout Robert Meachem with the 27th pick in the 2007 NFL draft. It’s an excellent value.

What the Experts Say:

Scout.com Profile:

Player Evaluation: Meeting expectations last season Meachem offers a lot of potential, yet still needs work to complete his game. Has the skills to develop into a number one wide out.

STRENGTHS: Downfield Threat, Speed

Robert Meachem Photo AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT: Route-Running Skills

Biography: All-Conference selection last season after producing a career-best 71/1,298/11. Started two games as a sophomore and totaled 29/383/2.

Pos: Physically gifted prospect with terrific size/speed numbers. Plays with good balance and body control, and makes the difficult reception in contorted positions. Displays a burst of speed, tracks the deep throw and effortlessly makes the reception in stride. Stays low exiting breaks, positions himself to make the reception and extends to catch the pass.

Neg: Inconsistent route-runner who slows into breaks. Not quick releasing off the line. Struggles in battles when he should not.

UPDATE Scouts.inc:

Defensive tackle is the top need for the Saints and Alan Branch was still on the board. Linebacker is the second greatest need and David Harris was still on the board. Corner is the third greatest need and Chris Houston was still available. And didn’t New Orleans find a pretty decent receiver on the second day of the draft last year? The point is the Saints should have addressed their needs on the defensive side of the ball before taking advantage of a deep receiver corps. At least they picked up a talented receiver. Meachem has the speed to stretch the field and open up the underneath routes for Marques Colston. He can also produce after the catch. However, Meachem isn’t a great route runner and he needs to get more physical or corners will have some success pushing him around.
