Ukraine Arrests Belarus Rowers

Ukraine has arressted the Belarus National Rowing Team for illegally entering the Ukraine during a practice.

The border guard service said a coast guard vessel was dispatched to intercept and detain 10 rowers who had crossed into Ukrainian waters on the border with Transdniestria, a region of ex-Soviet Moldova controlled by separatists.

Team members told officials they were unaware they had crossed the border in the southern Ukrainian region. They now face charges in court.

You know this strikes me as just a little extreme. At least the citizens of Ukraine can feel safe that their border patrol can stop people at the border before they can row the boats that Ukrainians won’t row.

Ozzie Guillen is Crazy

When asked about the White Sox doing a 20 year reunion for the 2005 team similar to the one done for the 1983 team Ozzie painted an artisitc picture of the future.

”Those ceremonies — ‘Oh, let’s bring back those guys from 2005,’ we’re all crippled and fucked up, pushing wheelchairs, kids crying because his dad was on the ballclub — fuck that,” Guillen said. ”I don’t need that bull. A bunch of fat guys, another one is broke. ‘Hey, where’s your ring?’ ‘Oh, I don’t know, I sold that son of a bitch two years ago.’”

What does White Sox Management think?

Said Sox vice president of communications Scott Reifert: ”I guess we can scratch the reunion off the list.”

Dodgers Fail Geography 101

Whats wrong with this picture:

Dodger Spring Training T-Shirt

From Tom Hoffarth, who points out that the Dodgers aren’t leaving Vero untill after 2008. Maybe its because Brady Penny designed the shirt.

A-Rod To Angels?

ESPN Radio has been reporting rumors that speculation of a deal between the Angels and Yankees involving Alex Rodriguez due to issues surrounding Rodriguez unresolved option to exit his contract after this season and the Angels lack of offensive force to support Vlad. Details are scarce, more to follow.

Update: The LA Times has a brief piece on it.

Nike Recalls Sumo2 Driver

Every golf equipment supplier works to push the limit of USGA Rules and it looks as if Nike may of accidentally exceeded those limitations.

In a memorandum sent to Nike’s golf professionals and retailers, company president Bob Wood said, “The CT of a number of drivers fell out of our approved engineering specifications. While the result of this variance is an additional distance benefit of only one to two yards, it lies outside of the parameters as established by the USGA.”

Wood said the problem was brought to his attention by the USGA in late February, and that the USGA was made aware of the potential problem by a “competitor.”

Characteristic time (CT), which is measured by the so-called “Pendulum test,” refers to a driver face’s tendency to deform slightly at impact, resulting in improved ball speed. The USGA and R&A set a characteristic time limit of 239 microseconds, plus a tolerance of 18 microseconds. This correlates to the previous coefficient of restitution (COR) test and its limit of .822 with a manufacturing tolerance that extended to .830. By comparison, a wooden-headed driver has a COR of about .780.

“I don’t think anybody can sell a driver made at 239 [CT],” Wood said in a conference call with reporters. “I’d be pulling your leg if I didn’t say that we didn’t try to get as close as possible to the limit.”

I can’t fault Nike for pushing the limit, that what they have to do. Now the average golfer may not mind the extra yard or two on their drive (unless they have a wicked slice), but as a Pro I’d be ticked if I lost due to a manufacturing error.

Of course Nike has a video on their site saying “Whoops” and offers an exchange and quality assurance program for the replacement drivers.

Penguins Reportedly Staying in Pittsburgh

Look slike a deal may of been reached to keep the Penguins in Pittsburgh.

(KDKA) PITTSBURGH After all the uncertainty, and the back and forth discussion over whether the Pittsburgh Penguins would stay here or possibly leave town, the long wait appears to be over.

KDKA sources have confirmed that the new arena deal is done.

As KDKA’s Bob Pompeani first reported on KDKA-TV News at 11:00pm, the city, the state and the Penguins have all come to an agreement over how to build and pay for a new arena.

And that means the Pens will stay right here in Pittsburgh.

The official announcement is expected before tonight’s game against the Buffalo Sabres.

Last week’s meeting lasted more than four hours and produced significant progress on the framework for a new multi-purpose arena. Some bigger stumbling blocks were finance rates on an extra $20 million added as a contingency to a proposed arena bond issue.

Sources tell Pompeani that the overall price tag will be higher than the original $290 million that was first discussed.

The Penguins have agreed to put up four million a year toward a new building. They also have agreed to put up $500,000 a year for a new parking garage in the arena complex.

The full details will not be know until the offical announcement and there are a few more meetings to hammer out the fine points of the deal. But it looks as if its going to happen and AEG will have to find a new team to woo for their Kasas City Arena.

Not Even Jesus Can Save the Lakers

Well, at least according to Phil Jackson:

“The way they are playing now, it doesn’t matter who comes back,” said Lakers Coach Phil Jackson, obviously upset. “Jesus Christ could come back and we still wouldn’t have a chance because we’ve ruined the mix by not playing together.”

Well I guess that means all you Laker fans don’t need to block out time in your schedule for the victory parade in.

Attempted Injunction to Keep Penguins

Well some new characters are getting involved in the fight over the Pittsburgh Penguins, this time a local businessman and Democrat politician are trying to use the court to limit the rights of a business owner.

A local business owner and a former Allegheny County commissioner plan to seek a court injunction today to give county residents the right to buy the Pittsburgh Penguins rather than let them relocate.

The idea, said former Democratic County Commissioner Mike Dawida, is to give Penguins fans sort of a right of first refusal. Because the public has invested tax money in the team — $10 million in Regional Asset District money paid for high-rent club seating 10 years ago, for example — it ought to get a chance to purchase the franchise before it is allowed to leave, he said.

“We put at least $10 million into the team, plus there’s (Mellon) arena itself,” which was built with public money, said Dawida, a candidate for city controller. He said he wants to keep this effort separate from politics.

“Raising the money is the easy part. The (legal) precedent-setting and all those kinds of things, that’s the difficult part.”

They’ll have to convince a county judge that the Penguins’ acceptance of public money makes the public a stakeholder in the team. The effort would also require overturning a rule adopted by National Hockey League owners that bars public ownership of a team, they said.

“It will change all of sports, if we win,” Dawida said. “Every city will adopt this.”

The first thing is their plan would break league rules, which makes it unlikely to happen. They are attempting to attach strings to money already spent and allocated by punishing them for fulfilling their lease obligations and doing what they feel is best for their business. Beyond that you can’t simply apply the theory “that the Penguins’ acceptance of public money makes the public a stakeholder in the team,” to a sports franchise alone. By the logic that accepting public money means the public is a stakeholder would mean that any tax payer should have the right to tell any person or entity accepting public money what they should do. I’m sure that small business, homeowner, etc would who took government aid would love that idea. I would also suspect that Mr. Dawida is using this as a ploy to get himself some votes, but of course no politician has every done something stupid to get votes…

LSU Women’s Basketball Coach Resigns

LSU women’s basketball coach Pokey Chatman has resigned from her role prior to the NCAA Tournament citing she would be a distracting to the team from this point on.

A day after she announced she would resign after the NCAA tournament, Chatman said Thursday she was leaving the team immediately.

“There’s been 20 to 25 things that are just floating out there, and I think she thought if she just stepped away from it she could eliminate that from even multiplying,” Starkey said. “She has her reasons, and hopefully, soon she’ll address that herself.”

The Times-Picayune of New Orleans reported on its Web site Thursday that the resignation was prompted by the school’s discovery of alleged inappropriate conduct between the 37-year-old Chatman and one or more players. Later, ESPN.com reported LSU had found out about an alleged improper sexual relationship between Chatman and a former player.

Dan Patrick made an interesting point about the issue that if it had been a male coach and a men’s team would this be a bigger story. It would have been a bigger deal on a men’s team with a men’s coach. The stereotype especially of female softball and basketball players is that they are all lesbians anyways; as a result many people just stereotypically expect it in women’s sports. So when something like this happens the common response becomes “Well who didn’t see THAT coming.” With men’s sports one is far more apt to apply the stereotype that they are manly men and homosexual behavior between coach and player just isn’t supposed to happen because of it.

There should be more outrage over this, but not because it involves alleged homosexual activity. It should be because she is a coach and by default a mentor to these players, as a result many of these players look up to her, and she should not be developing a sexual relationships with any players. Regardless if it is any combination of player and coach sex, the coach is in the wrong and there should be outrage over the abuse of their position. She should be punished severely and never allowed to coach again.

USC’s Aryan Brotherhood

USC just isn’t having the best of times lately, they have a slew of football players making and acting out some really stupid decisions. The latest was starting a Facebook group dedicated to White Power as a joke. Of course they appear to be skipping English class or lack the mastery of cutting edge technology like spell check.

The racist Facebook group was created by a USC football player and showed a graphic of a black baby in handcuffs. Junior linebacker Clay Matthews created the group, “White Nation,” which featured a graphic with the caption, “arrest black babies before they become criminals.” Teammates David Buehler, Brian Cushing, Dan Deckas and Dallas Sartz joined the group.

“This group is not for the faint of heart,” read the group’s description. “All members are athletes of Caucasion (sic) descent. DISCLAIMER: In no way are the following memebers (sic) intolerant of others, we are just doing our duty of protecting the Arian (sic) brotherhood.”

These guys need to learn the difference between funny and stupid. Deadspin thinks “This should do wonders for USC’s recruiting“.

The time has come for Carroll to swing the hammer and get these guys in line, pretty soon USC will be entering the reputation territory of schools like Miami and Nebraska.
